Ten Things I Love About VoIP
Remember the movie loosely based on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew? Ten Things I Hate About You?
Well, here’s my “Ten Things I Love About VoIP.”
- Because of Skype, GizmoProject and other VoIP services, I can now call around the world, for around only $0.20. Beat that, analog phone lines!
- Business gets done fast, in a cheaper way. Because VoIP connects me to service providers around the world who can provide great service for less, we can close business deals, negotiate, and even just build relationships, through the beauty of VoIP.
- The 3 SkypePhone. I have to admit that this phone is a true beauty. My girl friends won’t be raving about it as much if they didn’t find it, err, a “cutie” to behold too. This may be so gay-geeky of me, but I have to admit, it IS a beauty. (Check out the pink-trimmed “cutie” girls. I’m sure you would agree with me and my friends. Black is tops in my book.)
- Skype. No matter how you look at it, Skype has revolutionized the way VoIP has been used. For those who don’t want to mess with Asterisk and other hardcore-geek stuff that we manly men-geeks do, Skype is the best solution around: Secure payment system, great service (no excess charges, wrongly billed accounts, errors in billing or even locked out credit cards here), and a fun interface. One of my girl friends raves about the login “zhwoom”/Take a deep breath™ sound. I roll my eyes and exclaim, half to myself: “Girls.”
- I meet new friends over Yahoo and Google Talk’s voice chats. It’s nice interacting with different cultures.
- Video on VoIP rocks! I find it funny that people find marriage prospects online. Heck, they even end up marrying! But today, it’s no longer funny as it is fun for everyone, because video allows people to see the person they will wake up to every day of the rest of their lives even before they make plans to meet up and date “in the real world.”
- VoIP is maturing to the point that some VoIP clients, like Skype (am I turning into a Skype endorser or what?) actually allow file transfer, video on VoIP, SMS.. Even GizmoProject has SMS features. GizmoProject also allows file transfers, and it has additional features like integrating your Yahoo IM account with it. You can also view maps of your call’s location with their “Map It” feature. Video on Gizmo is also on the horizon, with their v.4.0 beta. Gizmo is maturing and trying to catch up fast with Skype, so it seems.
- VoIP allows me to keep tabs with friends and family elsewhere in the world. Friends I’ve lost touch with or who are now too far for cheap phone calls that stretch into hours can now be reached less expensively through VoIP. Before, you had to pay hundreds of dollars for a few hours’ worth of catching up. Today, it’s less of a dent on the wallet.
Hmm. I’m two points short. And I need coffee. But for the next post, I’m going to discuss my last two favorite things about VoIP.
Cheers!
