Amp is now FreePBX

Those of you who use Asterisk@Home, I’m sure that by now you’re familiar with having a GUI at your fingertips. There are those of us however, who have not had the luxury of a GUI and all the good ones were pay only… which sucked. HOWEVER, now, AMP’s creator, Coalescent Systems, has released FreePBX, which I think is mainly just a title change. So if you didn’t know about this free one, here it is folks!

FreePBX is webbased, thus you will need a web server installed, and as always, Apache is reccomended. The FreePBX wiki lists these as it’s highlights.

- Add or change extension and voicemail accounts in seconds
- Native support of SIP, IAX, and ZAP clients (other endpoints are supported through custom extensions)
- Supports all Asterisk supported trunk technologies
- Reduce long distance costs with LCR
- Route incoming calls based on time-of-day
- Create interactive Digital Receptionist (IVR) menus
- Design sophisticated call groups
- Manage callers with Queues
- Upload custom on-hold music (MOH)
- Search company directory, based on first or last name
- Detect and receive incoming faxes
- Share administrative duties
- Backup and Restore your system
- Save audio recordings of calls
- View call detail reporting with asterisk-stat
- View extension and trunk status with Flash Operator Panel
- View conversation recordings with Asterisk Recording Interface (ARI)
- Spanish translation provided by Fernando M. Villares TerĂ¡n

I feel that I need to start from scratch on my Asterisk Box, so I will be installing Knoppix on there and then once Asterisk is installed, I will be trying out FreePBX, which seems very very promising. So check it out guys.

Astwind – The Review

I finally decided to give this a shot. Astwind is a port of Asterisk to windows, thus it’s called Astwind, easy to remember, huh? Ok, well, I’ve heard that it’s somewhat buggy, and possibly a pain in the butt to install, well, too bad, I’m going to do it. I’ll give everyone a review on it once I finish checking it out. I should be done sometime this week.

P.S. Does the title of this post look like a movie title to you? Maybe it’s just me.

I’m home.

Whew. I haven’t done that much driving in a LONG time. Well, everything is fine now and taken care of. I’ll try to write something up for th site tonight, but no guarantees. I have a TON of email to answer and a lot of things that need to be finished up from the trip, so we shall see.

Gone for three days

Bad news guys. Something just came up and I am going to be in Virginia for three days. So wish me luck and a safe trip. If I can grab hold of a computer while I’m gone, I’ll post something for everyone. Thanks for all the support!

Using Asterisk In Your Home – Using Voicemail (Basics)

Today we are going to discuss the basics of using Asterisk as a voicemail server. Voicemail is an extremely easy to learn and use command in Asterisk.

First of all, we need to add it to our dialplan. If you wanted to use it as only voicemail, you can set it to something like this.

exten => 33,1,Answer()
exten => 33,2,Wait(2)
exten => 33,3,Voicemail(225)

Using Asterisk In Your Home – The Uses

So now we have Asterisk set up for home use. What can we do with it now? If you happen to have mischevous teenage kids, you can log all your calls! Maybe you want to have a seperate line for those teens. The great thing about Asterisk is flexibility. You can do almost anything you can think of.

Here are a couple ideas for you.

  • Call logging
  • Call forwarding
  • Virtual phone lines
  • Call recording
  • Conferences
  • Cheap phone service
  • Voicemail
  • Wakeup calls
  • Reminder calls

There are a thousand and three other things to do with it, but that’s just the first couple things that come off the top of my head.

P.S. I want to hear what you guys use Asterisk for in your house. Post a comment with your ideas.

Underfire Radio is back.

Underfire Radio: Underground and Underfire

We’re back guys. The best in technology talk has returned. Check out the website at http://UFR.catractprod.com. We will be getting our own domain again *soon* so watch out for that. The “nice” folks at 1and1 made sure that we aren’t getting our domain back from them, so we’ll have to find something else.

For those of you who don’t know who we are, we’re a technology internet radio show. We don’t discuss ONLY technology, but that’s the main focus of the show. So if you’re a person, a dog, or even a flying squirrel, you might find something of interest there since you’re on this site. Check it out guys!

NuFone & Asterisk

Bah. NuFone seems to be a HUGE issue that people have. I know when I first started with Asterisk I had my NuFone account for nearly two months. Yes, I know. Crazy crazy. Ok, so after I finish my 5 part series on using Asterisk in the home, I’ll give everyone an indepth look at getting NuFone’s VOIP service to work with Asterisk. Keep an eye out guys. I should have it out soon!
